What We Are Here to Do

North Kootenay Martial Arts has been operating for 5 years. The goal of the club has always been a space to creatively explore and practice martial arts
and to be able to do the most difficult, to change oneself, to adjust attitude and aptitude in a positive way. Through this, we can influence the world positively. So, children and adults, all people of all types, are given the same
tools to survive, be confident, and overcome fears. That is what we are here to do. Provide techniques that work.

How Do We Achieve the Goal?

We get to where we are going by moving. By becoming coordinated, by having better balance, and by getting stronger, we feel better. By the nature of the
practice, there is a benefit to a person’s clarity and concentration.

Everything about oneself is enhanced when we practice on a regular basis. So, by entering an affordable space, a space with classes almost every day, and
a space with a diverse class set, there is an opportunity to grow. This is how we are reaching our goal. Proper practice on a regular basis.

Fighting and Self Defense

There are many people with many goals in life. At the heart of these goals, happiness and survival are woven in. To achieve this, wellness is a key component.
Practicing a martial art brings wellness through improving all physical aspects: strength, flexibility, endurance, coordination, and balance on the outside, clarity, confidence, honour, and compassion internally. At our school, we
work off of our experience in traditional martial arts practice and fuse it with modern scientific knowledge of the human body. This offers a complete picture of health, striking, and grappling skills. We hope you will join the group
of great people who we’ve been working with over the years. Thank you for your interest in North Kootenay Martial Arts.

Our Instructors

Brent McDonald is a lifetime Nelson resident who has practiced boxing, traditional Chinese and Japanese martial arts, as well as Thai kickboxing. Interested by age 5, he participated in Wing Chun, Taekwondo, Karate, and Aikido. In
seventh grade, he started wrestling, coaching the team by his senior year of high school. After high school, with no wrestling forum to participate in, he started to focus on Jiu Jitsu, Thai boxing, and Mixed Martial Arts. Teaching
Jiu Jitsu for over 20 years to children and adults has led to a high level of skill amongst students with purple and higher belts under his lineage. Brent received his black belt in Jiu Jitsu from world champion black belt Rick DuBois.

Aaron Price has practiced Thai boxing, Judo, and Jiu Jitsu since childhood and is a most valued coach and instructor, and a great practitioner of martial
arts. He holds a black belt and is the head grappling instructor at Pride Gym in Trail. He is a valuable reference and we are honoured to have him for his discipline and dedication to martial arts.
